Description

This is the “nose gunner” on a B-17G World War II bomber. He sits in front of and below the pilots. He has a great view but is also a prime target for enemy fighters. Taken 3 days ago at the Baca Raton airport in Florida. This plane is owned by the Collings Foundation. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

I really love these old warriors. Its like looking at a classic Harley or Indian motorcycle. Sure the new ones are fast but they have no charisma, no grace. Excellent shot. Got any more?

Great shot. I wonder if this gunner was in a safer spot to the tail gunner. I don't know which would be worse....oh and then there is the one underneath!

Tremendous shot! Great views indeed but as German Fighter tactic normally involved attacking from the front, he was the one who landed a few 20mm Cannon shells in him... Not nice! Rob

Forgive my lack of knowledge on these older planes but I am curious what the little gold symbols stand for. Nice capture Dana, thanks for sharing this one with us.

Fine clarity, color and detail in this capture, Dana! Judging from the decals, this craft was on a ton of sorties during WWII. And, the bombardier sat up front when they approached the target.

An amazing and historic photograph Dana, how brave those men were that had the job of the main gunner on those planes, one cannot imagine what they went through. Thank you for sharing this, hugs Jane xx

Outstanding Dana. Always glad to see another airplane poster:) This is a B-17 I haven't seen before. Looks like a modern day nose gunner climbing up for a look-see.

For Tennessecowgirl the gold /yellow coloured symbols are bombs and signify either the total combat missions of the aircraft and /or it's crew, the reason I say total missions , is the 'standard ' combat tour of duty in World War 2 ,for a United States Army Air Forces bomber crew was 50 missions ,and at a fairly quick glance there seems to be a lot more then 50 such symbols, the 3 white Swastikas are the number of Nazi German fighter 'kills' the nose gunner /Bombardier had personally. As well the nose/chin turret was operated by the Bombardier on these aircraft, so once the plane was in it's actual bomb run the turret was virtually out of action which is why there were also what are called 'cheek 'window mounted machine guns on each side of the nose, which you can see where the clear part of the nose meets the rest of the aircraft, ,which would be used by the aircraft's navigator to defend the aircraft at this time

Nice shot! Yeah, I'd not like to be the target of a 50 cal, never mind a 20mm!
