Description
I had planned to upload another image tonight but reading Cheri's post today made me think of something I wrote when I was still working. It's how I felt at the time. I have added a news item I read several weeks ago. It's still pretty grim out there so you've got to find ways to take care of yourself.
NEWS ITEM;
Many large corporations reported that revenue was down but profits were up last quarter. That's because they'd cut labor costs by laying off workers and squeezing more productivity out of the people who remained. Workers who say they're being asked to do more with less are just plain right.
Thirty-eight percent of respondents said layoffs had occurred at their companies over the past year, according to the survey.
• 66 percent said morale has suffered on the job and people are less motivated
• 64 percent said there is too much work and not enough people to do it
• 37 percent believe the wrong people were laid off, leading to inefficient coverage of some departments
we are prisoners
of our need to work
to eat
to live
each day
the cost
of survival
increases
each day
there are fewer
of us
and our burden grows
work harder!
produce more!
streamline!
automate!
and
as we bend to the weight of the shovel
the taskmaster shouts, "faster!"
as we dig our own graves
while the bosses
hold the gun to our heads
and whisper in our ears
"it's nothing personal!"

"it's nothing personal!" Like that makes it all alright and frees them from all responsibility. Excellent poem, Mark! That last line is perfect. When I read it, I could visualize all of the injustices described in your previous words, tumbling down into that last sentence. And hear it used to disclaim any culpability of the bosses for the situation of the workers.

wow, that's hits a little to close to home...I'm currently caught in the middle of this situation as well as many others, can't sleep as good, can't eat a proper meal without thinking am I going to eat like this down the road? To many people feel like this nowadays and you can see it in their fake smiles as they try to hold to what they have and not let others catch wind that they to have just lost their jobs or are scared they might be on the hit list...I could go on for hours...great poem and to everyone else "chin up" a happier time is coming around the corner sooner than we think.
