Description

Some days are made for photography. The elements line up beautifully and all you have to do is actually take the pictures. Photographers know these days instinctively, they feel them; like a reporter with a nose for news sniffing out a story. You scope out the conditions, you see that everything is perfect, you grab your camera and take as many pictures as you can before conditions change. You snatch your photos and come home clutching your prizes. It's a great feeling. This picture was made on such a day. Chip and I--after having made numerous photos--decided to be adventurous and follow the North Branch of the Chicago River into uncharted territory. We saw some interesting sights along the way. This was one of them. Photographed somewhere on the Northwest Side of Chicago, on January 9th, 2010.

Funny how the river looks so narrow there...well it IS narrow, little more than a Creek, but leave it to Chicago to call it a river. You can walk across it if you don't mind wading in water up to your thighs. Oh well...I wouldn't do that now as it's too cold. I love the light in this. I remember that day and that meandering walk. The light was just so perfect and so crisp. You really caught that in this image. I like it a lot! You should post that other one soon, the one you took when it was a bit warmer...it's nicely moody and goes well with this one. But in terms of this one, I like it quite a lot. The tree bark contains just enough of a warm yellow to make this picture nicely lively.

I really like the all the verticals which give it a matrix, and then the slanty tree and diagonal shadows giving the compo some dynamism. Looks a bit less urban than some of your pics!

I see your point about perfect conditions - in this shot I feel the chill air on my face and the winter sunlight that brings no warmth. But a scene like this and it is all worth it.

You and Chip find beauty in the simplest things, everywhere you go. But you're right about just KNOWING---my vision is terribly altered now; I see it all thru the lens of a camera!!

Wonderful lines! I love the shadows of early morning and late afternoon. Time seems to slow down and stretch out just like these shadows stretch long across the icy river. Beautiful light, reflections and patterns. I love the spiky grass on the bottom right! Excellent shot!
