Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

Oh wow ... that light is fabulous! I can see why this caught your eye, even after you'd walked by it a million times. That flaking surface is really something special. Excellent image!

The light and textures are really great! I like the fact that this looks really decayed and grotty and old, and well...completely beyond its sell-by date. Rust is just cool, and I can never see too much of it, as long as it isn't on something of mine that I want in pristine, rust-free condition. Great light, and clear, sharp focus and a great find. If I recall, it was by an interesting tree too, or was that another house? Anyway, I like this a lot!

Oh Corey, what a fantastic find! The decay makes for a wonderful layered look and it reminds me of the layers in life... Sometimes you are up and look pretty and just the next day you could be down, looking ugly! Wonderful work indeed! :)

Wow, what a great find this is... Knowing myself, I would've taken 30 shots from 10 different angles (which you probably did as well) Excellent!

When I first saw this, it made me think of hard, dried, desert earth or something I've seen more of, thick layers of mud that have been dried by the hot Texas sun. This is wonderful! I love the patterns and the way some of them have lifted off of the surface. This has motion, as you can see which areas are most likely to be the next ones to fall. I wonder how many paint flakes are helped off by children (or maybe the odd adult) passing by. Beautiful light! I love the corner where it passes from light to shadow and odd shapes and textures emerge. Excellent!

I agree with everybody else, that this looks just fine, the way it is now... and you picked the right time to take advantage of it for your portfolio, but this would make, the perfectionist renovator I am, really happy, to get my teeth into this and make out of old - new again! Cheers BB
