Description

This is the dominant Alligator at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, west of Delray Beach, Florida. I figure that he is about 16 feet (4.8m). There are no walls or fences here. He can wander off at any time – as a matter of fact, he most likely wandered in, in the first place. The name, Wakodahatchee, is derived from the Seminole Indian Language and translates as "created waters." This area was created by the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department. Every day, the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department's Southern Region Water Reclamation Facility pumps approximately two million gallons of highly treated wastewater into the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. By acting as a natural filter for the nutrients that remain, the wetlands work to further cleanse the water. The created waters at Wakodahatchee Wetlands are an example of people giving something back to nature. Fifty acres of unused public water utilities land has been transformed into a wetlands ecosystem. Most of my bird postings are taken here. I took 278 photos Tuesday with only 16 rejects. Wakodahatchee is less than a 2 mile walk from home. Info from the Palm Beach County web site. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Holy cow, Dana!! When I saw the picture I thought 'Wow...Dana even managed to get the picture without the fence in the way'...and then I learn there IS no fence. That is one HUGE gator!!! Hope your lens allowed you to be far, far away, LOL!!! Well, you certainly won't see any of those up here in NH!!! Nice pic!!!!

This is the place I was trying to tell him that we visited. It was awesome. We had went down to Vero beach to watch the Dodgers spring training, and then drove the coast and came across signs for this and stopped. Thanks for sharing this, I would love to get back down this way. Fantastic place for taking photos. Great capture Dana.

WOW! This is a stunning (and brave) picture. These guys can move pretty fast and since they're nature's aquatic appetites on legs, I'd steer clear of them...ha...funny coming from a guy who sticks his fingers into wasps' nests just so the wasps in question would move into better positions. But wasps don't eat you. Having said that I should also point out how impressive this shot is. The snout of the guy (gal) on the right just adds an extra dimension to this. How many of them were there? I love the scale patterns and the way the catch the light. These are wonderful specimens.

Fantastic capture, Dana! The nice thing about the family that this gator belongs to is that they are ambush predators

One mean, no nonsense bruiser, I would say, Dana! Stellar and stark lighting contrast in this shot. I wonder how many shoes could you manufacture from him. Incidentally, if you check way back in my gallery, you will find a series of alligator shots that were taken around the area of the Louisiana and Texas border. Also, jocko500 has a lot of alligator pics from his neck of the woods.

Great shot. We have Salt Water Crocodiles here in Australia but not Alligators. Still, I understand the need to keep your distance!

Ah ya - say mabe next time you could get a better shot of his head - just get up there a bit closer - oh ya mabe you could do one of those put your head in his mouth shoots too ? You should know this may be a little risky - So you best think it through first - On second thought I like this shot - So be safe and take care my friend :)
