Description

This is a male Boat-tailed Grackle, taken today at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands Wildlife Preserve. They are very noisy and curious. Beautiful iridescent blue-black colors and about 16 ½ inches (42cm) long and with a 14 ½ inch (37cm) wingspan. The females are tan to brown and blend in with the dead vegatation in the Florida swamps. The name comes from the very long keel-shaped tail. This one must have thought that I was getting to close so he puffed up his crown. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

I love the tails on these guys; my parents used to live at Lake Havasu and had flocks of these, they were fun to watch. Great shot!

Grackles are so cute...I like the boat tails and the long tails...the long tailed grackles are so creatively named for their...well...their long tails. They're not much different from their boat-tailed cousins, but they're more European I think. I love the colors on this fella, and the way he's puffed his head-feathers up for you. I love the expression on his face, and despite what anybody says, I love the sounds they make! grackle songs are superb little metallic sounding arias.
