Description

Arteries pumping headlights Drive from shore to shore Down that endless highway Free to roam once more... Those are the opening lines of a poem I've never been able to finish. Every time I see cars streaming down the highway, I think of those lines and the poem that is seemingly never to be written. I also think of the quintessentially American idea of the road trip. The freedom to wander about--unmolested--from coast to coast in your private automobile. In the USA, this is considered a birhtright: one of the lynchpins of American Democracy. The idea that you can escape the tedium and stress of your everyday life by simply driving away from it has inspired countless songs, movies, books, etc, and continues to do so. It is an intoxicating notion that you can start an engine and roll into a new life, that you can leave it all behind and hit the highway. This picture was made off the Lawrence Avenue overpass above the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago on August 30th, 2007.

As the sign in the background states - outstanding start of a poem Corey. We have all dreamed that road trip. Boston to San Diego (by plane at 14) was my first. Then came the car. Boston to Washington,DC. Boston to Key West. Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia and the Trans Can all the way to Vancouver. Then the Grand Circle Adventure around the South West for months on end. You have to finish your poem, not only for you but also the rest of us. Dana

I love road trips. Dave however would prefer to drive. I like seeing everything. This is a pretty cool shot and a great poem start, one day you will finish it I am sure.

Road trip---oh yeah!! I love those lines, and all they make me think of. I have packed my car a couple of times and moved on, never quite knowing what was at the end. Great shot, I can feel those tires and hear that engine!!

Ah...the expressway from the overpass...it doesn't really matter which expressway or which overpass, as they all look largely the same, either with our without the el running down the middle of it. This is one of those sorts of Chicago views that I will always remember, no matter where I may eventually/ultimately wind up. Far away, no doubt, but where...well...who knows? Anyway, I love the amber hues of this as well as the deep/dark shadows and the visual invocation of speed! I can almost smell car farts. Hmmm...how romantic an olfactory image that is. I like this picture a lot! It has a nice mood. I also like the idea of an unfinished poem, but that's just me...I'm weird like that.

Outstanding, indeed! (How nice of them to include that word in the cityscape!) If you continue west on that highway you will end up in Seattle, and I will be SO happy to see you! :D I love the energy of this shot.
