Description

To call an aircraft carrier a "city at sea" is almost a cliche. Yet it is true. The USS Midway (CV-41) had its own police and fire departments, a hospital, a dentist office, a library, it's own television station and convenience stores. But most important to the officers and crew, the Midway served four meals a day for the 4000 or so men and women stationed aboard. Dining facilities were segregated by rank. In this image the center is the "chow line" getting serving breakfast for the crew. On the lower left is a shot of the messdeck where junior enlisted ate their meals. Because there were far few seats than crew members this wasn't the place for a leisurely dining experience - the crew went through the chow line using one of the metal trays show in front of the server, found a seat ate quickly and left so a shipmate could sit. In the Navy senior enlisted, those whose rank is between E7 and E9 - Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer and Master Chief Petty Officer - earn special privilege including their own private mess area - shown on the upper left. Junior commissioned officers ate in the wardroom shown at the upper right and Senior Officers were served in the Senior Officer Dining room and enjoyed table service. Enjoy

Yep and I remember doing my sea duty on the USS Saratoga when in the Marines. No matter what your MOS you had to do some time working in the dinning area or kitchen. Thanks for the memories Excellent photos.

Wow, this is just great. I had a boyfriend on a carrier (USS Bonhomme Richard) years ago and told me how many people were on board. I'd had no idea what that really meant till he came back into port and I went to meet him. He had to find ME-- with all those sailors and white hats, it was impossible to pick out YOUR guy!!

So what you're saying is it was just a "small" dinner party! With volume like this I don't expect it was gormet food, more like a college cafeteria (mmm...sloppy joe). Excellent collage and description.

Interesting to see each of the mess rooms. I've been in the mess areas of a couple of battleships (Missouri and North Carolina) but haven't made it to an aircraft carrier yet. How did I miss one of them?
