Description

Besides recapturing what life at sea was like the USS Midway museum has a wonderful collect of several generations of Navy/Marine Corps aircraft. The plane on the left is an WW II era SNJ. It was nicknamed the "pilot maker" was was used for advanced flight training by the Navy and the US Army Air Corps. Later, during the Korea War it served as a forward observer. The aircraft on the right is an F-14 Tomcat, the Navy's premier fighter for decades until retired in 2006. It featured a swing wing design which allowed to reach speeds in excess of Mach 2.0 and yet have a relatively low landing speed which was important while operating off of carriers. Even if you're not a fan of war planes you may recognize the F-14 as the type of aircraft Tom Cruise flew in the movie Top Gun.

Neat coverage of two long serving warbirds. My cousin was the assistant comptroller at Grumman for the F-14 project and took me through the plant to see the first engineering mockups and production models in jigs on the floor in the mid-60s. All we had to do was show out ID cards to the gate guard and in we went all by ourselves after hours...never happen today! :)

Love them both, particularly the SNJ in "yellow peril" mode. Looks like that F-14 is ready for take-off, too!
