Description
Oral history passed down by local American Indians says the people of the Yosemite area were created here and have been here since the beginning of time. The Ahwahneechee lived here for generations, before the arrival of Europeans in the mid-1800s. The surrounding Sierra Miwok tribes, who feared the tribe, called them by a Miwok word Yohhe'meti meaning "they are killers".
In 1851 the Mariposa Battalion was created under the authority of the Governor of California to put an end to raids carried out by Native Americans. Major James Savage led the Battalion into Yosemite Valley in that same year while in pursuit of 200 Ahwaneechees led by Chief Tenaya.
Chief Tenaya and his band were eventually captured and their village burned, fulfilling a prophecy an old and dying medicine man gave Tenaya many years before. The Ahwahnechee were escorted by their captor Captain John Bowling to the Fresno River Reservation near Fresno, California. Life on the reservation was unpleasant and the Ahwahneechee longed for their valley, prompting reservation officials to allow Tenaya and some of his band to return on their own recognizance in winter.
There are five entrances to Yosemite. This is the view from the southern entrance along Highway 41. What you see first is Bridalveil Falls with Inspiration Point on the left and Half Dome in the far distance.

I know this well. My son worked on the Merced white water guiding for the last 3 years. Yosemite is awesome. And yet another place of tears and terror for our Native American people.

Although I have never been there, this is a very recognizable site, and one which I never tire of seeing. This photo is particularly beautiful with the greens framing the scene and the pine needles at the upper right. Last week the History channel had a great show about Yosemite, mostly the geology. Very interesting, so your photo is very timely. Wonderful shot.

Ah, here's somewhere I have been to! Though perhaps not to this exact spot. I do have some images of the half dome. I don't have any images as nice as this. Beautiful capture! Excellent composition and detail!

I haven't been here (yet) and I can see myself there! This is an amazing view. A particular someone I know (off in the wilds of Russia) would immediately notice those two trees in the foreground. They stand out so perfectly. He'd probably call them the two brothers or something, and then go on to say something loopy and poetic about them. I'll refrain from loopy poetics, simply because I can't think of anything, but this is an excellent photograph and I love the intense and vivid (but not overwhelming) colors. Great work!

Beautiful recreation of Ansel Adams' famousBeautiful re-creation of Ansel Easton Adams' famous B&W shot. This is truly one of my favorite places on earth. Gorgeous green colors and Bridalveil Falls flowing at full capacity. In my five trips into the valley, I have not seen any of the falls with water in them. Dry season every time. You would think that I would learn. Awesome information also. Dana
