Description

No, I’m not trying to insult anyone. Just some more pictures from the new camera. The viola, an ancestor to the pansy, was familiar to people living in Greece in the 4th century B.C. They were cultivated by the Greeks for herbal medicinal use. Some time after the 4th century B.C. a plant similar to a viola was found growing in open areas with more sunlight. It was given the name wild pansy. The word pansy is traced back to the French word pensee, meaning thought or remembrance. The origin of the plants we now call pansy began in Iver, Buckinghamshire, England. In the early 1800's an inquisitive Lord Gambier and his gardener William Thompson began crossing various Viola species. History credits the gardener, William Thompson, with the discovery of a cross that began the new species V. x Wittrockiana. Discovered in 1839 and named "Medora," this pansy and its progeny became popular with gardeners and breeders throughout Europe. That’s all very good but I just think they’re pretty.

and they look like evil faces just staring, staring into your poor soul, deciding if you are in fact worthy of saving or just fertilizer for the next crop of pansies. Great photos and wonderful information

The are lovely, catch in a beautiful shot! Thanks for telling us that part of history, interesting. In our garden, every year we see a lot of 'Viola Tricolor'. We even 'put it' into our tea.

These are beautiful specimens. Pansies remind me of my grandmother, she always had them growing in the garden by the front door. Your new camera is working very well. Thanks for the history.

Oh, I love pansies, they always look like little frowning lions to me, and well...being born under the sign of Leo makes me very much aware of lion symbolism. I love the vivid colors here, and the collage layout really highlights these beauties. Great work.
