Description

This is my friend Sean. He's a writer. Can't you tell? We became acquainted at a writer's group in 1992 and have enjoyed a nicely loopy friendship ever since. In 1996, I was a contributing writer to a play in Bailiwick Theater's Pride Performance Series entitled He Wore Guns. It was strictly bottom-of-the-bill fare and when it was reviewed at all the notices were hardly stellar. I believe there were 10 performances and then it closed. Despite this rousing success, the producer liked my work and encouraged me to write a play of my own. I like to think that I could write anything, but a serious play proved beyond my grasp at that point. I called in Sean for reinforcement and we decided to work on an absurdist sketch comedy tentatively titled The Pervert Visionary Lobster. Despite our best intentions, that one didn't work either. There were a few bright spots, however. Among my favorites was a tv commercial parody penned by Sean called: "Kitty in a Box." It concerned dehydrated animals that were stored in boxes in the pet food isle of your local supermarket. The slogan for this imaginary product was: "Just add water for hours of family fun!" I guess you had to be there. This slightly messed-with picture of Sean was taken in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago on August 9th, 2008.

It's been forever since I've seen Sean. We should go looking for him. This is a great picture and the more I look at it, the more he not only looks like a writer, but he looks a bit like Samuel R. Delany, if Samuel R. Delany was a younger guy...okay, Delany is Black too, but the beards are similar, the body proportions are similar, the facial expressions are similar...and well...I've never seen Samuel R. Delany or Sean in the same room, which is quite telling...maybe one is the other? This is a great photo and I love the selective coloring. Fast learn you, my young Padawan. (Okay, just pretend I sounded like Yoda there.) This is great. Really top notch work.

You did him justice here---and the story about his play--and yours--is great. Sometimes you DO just have to be there!!
