Description

Wattled Jacanas forage on the Giant Amazon Water Lilies while a Jaribu (stork) fishes in the background. (Full view recommended) There are six races of Wattled Jacana; with the nominate Jacana ssp. jacana race jacana being the most widespread. Females are larger than males and lay four black-marked brown eggs in a floating nest (often on Giant Water Lilies). The male takes responsibility for incubation, with two eggs held between each wing and the breast. The females are polyandrous, and will help to defend the nests of up to four mates. Life is tough in the wild... if the female disappears and is replaced by another, the chicks are in danger of being killed by the new female so that her own eggs will have a better chance of survival. The Jaribu stork's name comes from the Tupi-Guaraní language and means "swollen neck". They are found in Central & South America; Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and Paraguay. They eat fish, mollusks, and amphibians, occasionally eat reptiles and small mammals. Rendered in Vue 8i with no postwork. Mangroves are a combination of E-on's and Martin Frost models. Bird and lily pad/flower models by me (Songbird ReMix Jacanas, SBRM Shorebirds Volume I and Water Lily Garden).
