Description

I thought that I had caught a sleeping hawk but the birders that came alone were 100% sure that I had a juvenile Black Crowned Night Heron. He wasn’t sleeping, as you can see by the eye on me. As an adult s/he will be whiter and have a black crown. They are stocky for a heron with a short neck. This nocturnal feeder grows to about 25 inches (64cm) long and with a 44 inch (112cm) wingspan. I later spotted an adult, further back in the trees but keeping an eye on it’s young. Photo taken at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, February 2nd. Info from the National Geographic field guide to the birds of North America. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Oh, I LOVE this shot!! I love it when birds turn their head back and tuck them into the feathers of their back/wing. Our parrots do that and I think it's just precious!!

Wow, what a long name for such a little avian. Sparkingly stellar focus in this capture of the resting bird, Dana, who appears to have had a bad feather day.

Quite a nice shot! You caught him preening, which is always a plus for me. Birds always look so focused and intense when they're concentrating on fluffing their feathers.
