Description

I’ve found a second nesting Great Blue Heron with a new born chick. The chick still has his white “pin feathers”. You can’t believe the size of this nest. He will turn gray in a few weeks. Herons are about 46 inches (117cm) long and a wingspan of 72 inches (183cm). Taken at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Excellent capture! So, do they nest on the ground or are you climbing trees to get the shot?

This nest was on a low bush, on a small island, surrounded with water. No climbing involved, thank goodness. This is the same place those gators were. No way I’m getting near the water. I’ll continue to watch this nest and post the chicks progress. Dana

Sparkingly stellar clarity, focus, textures and composition in this show of the nurturing Blue Heron, Dana! And that nest is awesome.

they build they nests where gators are to protect them from the small mammals that can climb trees. But if they build they nest on a small tree of bust a big gator can and have hit the tree and knock the nest down and they eat the babies. so it a tought call on where to build. The birds do fight with each other for a good place to build they nest

Wow, another wonder! I've seen some nests here, but no activity. Maybe it's early for babies yet? Great capture!

Amazing bird and nest! Wonderful shot! I love the way she is all scrunched up and stands protectively over her chick. What an intent stare she has! Beautiful capture!

This is a marvelous picture! I love the mohawk hairdo pattern of those white "pin feathers" and the proud and protective parent is just downright elegant. This is superb work!
