Hello everyone and thanks for looking...
Had some terrible news yesterday... my Mom and Dad's sailboat had her mooring line cut by the propeller of a careless passing motorboat. She floated loose and beached on a rocky shoreline a mile away from her protected anchorage.
She is a total loss, and my folks are devastated, to say the least. They are retired school teachers, and they lived aboard her for almost five years before they retired. They sailed her to the islands, and eventually settled on the island of Vieques, to the east of Puerto Rico a couple years ago.
They owned the 'Lady for ten years, and her loss is like losing a member of the family. I feel terrible for them and can only imagine how their feeling. Their very resourceful and resilient folks, though, and I'm sure that eventually they'll recover, but it's really tough on them right now.
If anyone has any experience with rules and info on maritime salvage for something like this, I would be very grateful to hear about it.
My folks are dealing with a salvage company and I'm worried they'll be taken advantage of by them and the insurance companies, on top of their devastating loss.

That is so terrible. Mostly because it is part of them and who they are...so sorry for them. Ugh, and I don't envy them having to deal with salvage dealings...gosh. That sounds like a mess....wishing them the best outcome here....resilient or not, stuff like this hits hard and is just one more thing in a lifetime people didn't need to deal with. This is so sad Tom to have this happen to anyone is bad but to your family they must be gutted.. Do hope that they get it sorted and sorry don't have any experience salvaging.. do hope it all works out for them ok!!

I can't imagine the pain. How horrid for this to happen. I hope the insurance will be enough to find a suitable replacement but I know it can never be replaced ... the loss is overwhelming. Great shot and maybe one that will be useful with the insurance company.

Tom first of all I am so sorry to hear about this and will put you and your parents in my prayers. I can't imagine what their going through and my only advice would be to consult people in the area who have experience in this area. Of course hiring a lawyer might not be a bad idea either even though I'm no fan of them. Too bad the person who caused this can't be held responsible.

I hope that they can get the idiot who initiated this fiasco to take some financial responsibility, but I doubt it will happen. Your parents will be in my thoughts and prayers

Wow, Tom...folks above have said it all. As a retired Army guy in Kansas...maritime salvage is about as unknown to me as Greek. This is a spectacular photo but one I know you hoped you'd never take. The silver lining has to be that your folks didn't disappear with their boat in a storm somewhere. I wish them well!

That's sad news, sorry to hear about what happened to your parents' boat. When you get so attached with something you own it's just like losing a loved one. I surely understand their devastation.

That is really sad. To work so hard for your dream and then to have it lost. I am happy they had those years to enjoy it though as that is some memories they will always be able to treasure.

Oh man. That's really tough. I'm so sorry to hear about their loss. I can only imagine what they must be feeling right now. I'll ask around to see if anyone in my group of contact has any info they can use. hang in there.

I've lost a boat, not like this one, but it just fell apart from the weather while it was in my "x"'s posession.... from what I see of it, the top of the boat looks fine.... why not repair it?

terrible news tom dont know what to say. but dont panick it might turn out that the insurance company is correct they are not all thieves. a lot but not all.all the best.at least nobody is hurt physically.

Hi thanks for all of your kind words... As for Mike's comment... unfortunately, sailboats this size aren't meant to be resting on their sides like this. The surf beat her hull against the rocks and broke her back. The keel is snapped, and there's a hole in her port side where she was bashed against the rocks. My folks have arranged for a salvage company to take care of her. They'll refloat her with pontoons and tow her to a yard where her mast sails and fittings will be removed and sold. Now they'll have to deal with the insurance company to see if they can recover what she was worth. But they'll never get over the loss of the boat they had painstakingly put together over the last ten years. Thanks again for your comments and concern, it's very much appreciated. Tom

At least you guys weren't on it and hurt in different circumstances. Still a bloody shame though.
