Description
Remember back in the 70's, when the space enthusiasts talked about these grandiose "L5" space colonies? This one is called "Island 3," and is a cylinder 35 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide, with 3 panels of land and 3 panels of windows to let in sunlight reflected off huge mirrors. The whole thing spins to give "gravity" by centrifugal force.
Modeled in Blender and Vue 7 Pro Studio. Big Ecosystems, used 5 gigabytes of memory.

What a stunning and accurate image! The Lagrange colonies are still able to captivate space enthusiasts today and well...they're still feasible! We just lack the drive and the financial and political discipline to build them...we're more interested in the quick buck and ideological warfare than actually doing something that would expand the boundaries of human knowledge and experience (and economy.) But that's a rant for another day. This image is fantastic and reminds me of the days when I'd first discovered that science fiction and science fact when combined were (and still are) the most heady of artistic experiences. This image rocks!

Awesome. When I was a kid I used to think I'd grow up and have the opportunity to work on one. Fantastic capture of possibility

This kind of space colonies were used in the old anime "Gundam 0079" series, one of the best japanese cartoons of all times.
