Description

Carrier sailors often refer to the flight deck as the "roof" because they eat, sleep and work underneath it. But when a carrier like the USS Midway (CV-41) conducted flight operations the hectic and seeming chaotic atmosphere became intimidating to the observer. With high-power aircraft being catapulted into the sky or landing every 30 to 45 seconds with other planes taxi-ing around the deck while teams of sailors refueling or re-arming planes for the next launch, the flight deck every operation and every event was carefully orchestrated for maximum efficiency and safety. Still with propellers spinning and jet engines acting like giant vacuum cleaners flight deck sailors had to be alert and aware all the time. Flight operations have long ceased on the Midway but her almost four acre flight deck has been put to good use displaying a part of the museums collection of aircraft. In this shot we have on the left an RA-5 Vigilante supersonic bombar and reconnaissance aircraft, Peaking out aft the Vigilante is an A-4 ground attack Skyhawk. On the centerline is a EKA-3 Skywarrior bomber and electronic warfare bird. Continuing around we see a F14 Tomcat, a FA-18 Hornet and finally a F-4 Phantom. Oh, by the by - a portion of the San Diego skyline and the clear blue skies of Southern California provide a nice background. Enjoy

This is amazing! Carriers always remind me of something you'd see in Star Wars, only on water and not booming and crackling in the vacuum of space (gotta love sci-fi movies that totally disregard science!) This is an amazing shot, so rich in details, light textures and colors. Amazing work! I love it.

Gotta get out to Southern Cal and see this mighty ship and her planes! Wonderful shot to fit all the planes in. The only one that stumped me (before I read your commentary) was the Vigilante!
