Description

One of the privileges of Carnival is that one can hide under a mask and get some illicit fun. This was the meaning of Carnival, a time when social barriers were left down for a short time and people from different social classes could mix up freely. However, in the Venetian Republic some masks similar to that posted yesterday were used all the year round at night. One never knows whether a masked person is a man or a woman, a Venetian or a stranger, one from the countryside or from a foreign country. It's the dark side of Carnival, the night when all cows are black, under the brilliant colors. This reveller has given away a tiny bit of information: she's married, but ready to have fun. Today this isn't very important but some centuries ago it was a fascinating detail.... Thank you for your kind comments.

Superb shot and the lighting is lovely. Very interesting history as well, which I always enjoy. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

Excellent image and wonderful detail. I saw a movie today that featured a masked ball. One man was interested in another man so he came to the ball dressed as a woman with his mask. All things are possible when you are anonymous.

I'm left wondering where this shot was taken as in much of Europe wedding rings are worn (IIRC) on the fourth finger of the right hand. Ah! ... at any rate, the joys of fasching. Nice shot and commentary.

I love your commentary! You're like an anthropologist. This is a wonderful image and yes, even now something as simple as a ring is very telling. I love the intimacy of this shot and the sense of place/time/color. I've always enjoyed masks (though I own so few) and its amazing how as things change they remain the same at their core. This is brilliant work in both image and commentary.

Beautiful image! Great detail and color. I like that her hand, the one part of her that is not disguised, stands out in sharp relief against the blues and blacks of her costume. The the netting and her hand seen through it are lovely.
