Description

Getting to tour this one of a kind, "First Modern Airliner" was a fortunate "VIP" experience for auntietk and me. It is in a separate hangar at Boeing's Restoration Center, Everett, Washington. All airliners prior to this Boeing Model 247, which made its' first flight in February 1933, were slower, noisier, and less sophisticated in every way. The 247 preceded the more famous DC-1, 2 and 3. We laugh now about how this happened. We met the senior volunteer...the man in charge of the entire Center. It was near the end of the day, no other visitors were there. We were ready to depart for dinner but "Bob" wouldn't let us go without seeing his pride and joy. Regular visitors only get to stand behind a rope and observe from afar. We were shown both the inside of the plane and the entire hangar...with all sorts of unseen goodies rarely seen by other visitors. This Boeing 247 is airworthy, goes to airshows and will one day be in the Boeing Museum of Flight hanging from the ceiling where no one will see it up close again. Why isn't it there now? A new museum building needs funding and building. This experience goes to show, some times you just have to be in the right place at the right time:-) Airliner details: Click Here Bill:) "Afternoon Thoughts" thumb_2019710.jpg

Superb collage of a classic, but unsung airliner! I hope they don't retire it to the museum anytime soon as I would love to get a look at this sky pearl flying! You got the inside tour the Chicago way, "It's not what you know. It's who you know." Bob did you right and I'm glad he did.
