Description

Here we have a pre-WWI helmet of an enlisted man (other ranks) in the Austrian Royal and Imperial 7th Dragoons. The inside of the helmet comb is stamped with a "7". This helmet is somewhat unusual in that the color of the comb is not the usual black (black and gold being the Austrian state colors). The crest insert is red. This, plus the red feather plume (in place if the usual "brush" of wool) indicates this unit - or a subunit within the 7th - came from the Tyrol area. The helmet is untouched and original, save for a replacement liner in the body of the helmet itself. I have photographed two other Austrian helmets of the era, all belonging to the same collector. They will follow. Thank you for taking a look. Any and all comments are welcome. Special thanks to those of you who favorite on of my submissions. 2/28/10 Update: under the forward-leaning part of the comb, I discovered a stamped numeral "7". So, we have an arsenal mark for the 7th Dragoons!

You did an excellent job on this. No glare, color is vivid, and detail is exceptionally clear. Great photo.

Very well done shot. The helmet itself looks rather heavy, I feel for the soldier who had to wear it for any length of time. Were you allowed to try it on?

I have not weighed the helmet, but it is surprisingly light for its size. I've worn the US WWII/Vietnam war style helmet and the K-pot/"Fritz" helmets. The latter is quite heavier than the Dragoon. Remember, these helmets were not designed to deflect or stop bullets or fragments. They were a distinctive part of the uniform, and were somewhat light (compared to what modern WWI and after helmets are). Once, I had the distinct honor to examine a nearly perfect Napoleonic French Czapka (Lancer's helmet). It was made of pressed felt over an inch (2.5 cm) thick in the body of the helmet! It was designed to stop a sword blade, and was appropriately heavy. The swords of the Napoleonic wars were no light affairs. They were designed to maim and kill. Swords after this period - for the most part - were almost decorations, rather than "real" weapons. I speak from experience, having handled many and collected some.

Good shot of something that was doomed by the war to end all wars. From that war came drab and colorless.

With a slow dial-up connection, I can't comment on all the helmets, or I won't get any sleep tonight, but I've really enjoyed them all. Fantastic photos.
