Born in Hilo, Hawaii and class of '66, I became very active in Barbells, Judo and love striking the heavy/speed bag. I've learned to Rollerblade and bike ride which is a very health sport. But time doesn't stop for anyone including for me. So my good friend Dave aka punaguy got me started in taking pictures. I'm having fun taking pictures especially hiking the mountains. I'm enjoying seeing the world thru your post on Renderosity. Mahalo and Aloha....Errol

Lava or gas? The smoke is dark as if it was gas. Nice shot anyway, at the right moment.

Without this shot the world would miss how our island is formed. Old land is cleared and burned as the new land develops...excellent catch! Aloha~

@Flixthe...Interesting question. The lava flow does not have any smoke, just what it burns up. All the smoke from the magma is degassed from Pu'uO'o crater and the fissures before it exit as lava. My guess, black smoke has a higher concentration of carbon. As the fire completely burns out everything, the color of the smoke changes (less carbon?). Anyone got any answers? Hmmmm....Now you got me curious. Why are our storm clouds dark? Aloha

I definitely can feel the heat! I do not think I could handle it in person. Amazing shot! Kinda looks like a firebird rising out. Well done!

Hot stuff as always! I can imagine a sound as well to add to the drama.

Yeah right, the bushes wouldn't be the only thing that's gone... Awesome capture; one might be inclined to think you lit the fire yourself to get that perfectly timed shot...lol! Well done my man!

Just amazing--and you get to see it happening--wow!!

I think what you are seeing here are unburned particles swept up by the intense heat. Lava, by contrast, has no unburned particles. They are all reduced to the elemental magma. Storm clouds are dark due to dust particles I believe. Great shot! We could use a few of those flows to heat up Alberta right about now, ha ha!

whaleman....Being dark or white clouds depends on the optical size of the raindroplents and your viewpoint. When its about to rain or storm, the droplets are larger/more thus scattering the light from where it came from. It would appear dark if light doesn't pass thru. As for the black smoke, I wonder if we could call those unburn particles carbon which is a nonmetalic element. What is carbon? Thanks my friend.
