Description

Seemingly untouched by human hands this priceless periodical was found sealed inside a wax envelope in the Associated Planets Publishing offices in Arundel. Of course the offices no longer exist, but in the basement of Mr Singh's minimart (open 24 hours and licenced!) was a metal cabinet marked APP. Inside were letters and papers from the then editor of SSD to his staff, contributors and employees of the Ministry of Supply, the British Rocket Group and even No10!! How did I discover this cache of gold? I was caught short and asked the bearded gent if I could use his facilities. I persuaded Mr Singh that I was helping a friend with a project on the local area and this might help. I gave him £10 for the lot and we parted on good terms. After rifling through the paperwork I saw a wax envelope lying on the bottom of the bottom drawer. I carefully slit it and eased out the item within. Imagine if you can the surprise... the very first issue of Space Science Digest from the summer of 1955... mint condition after more than half a century. Before I resealed the envelope I scanned the cover... and here it is. Yes yes yes... this is another Duo rocket rendered in Bryce and the whole thing created in PhotoShop. But wouldn't it be nice if we really could find a mint condition, mega rare publication purely by chance... Thanks for looking. Iain

Wow! The first issue of what was to become THE MAGAZINE TO READ that blew the lid off all that Top Secret stuff. 1955, full of promise that we would be setting foot on Mars by 1997 and have a permanent base on the Moon ... Heck, where is my flying car? LOL A great cover my friend :)

Brilliant pastiche! The layout and color scheme reminds me of the lesser SF pulps of the early 70s and those of the UFO pulps.

Beautiful image, reminds me of a cross bewteen and early German V2 rocket and a Von Braun multi stage rocket.

I'm guessing Mr Singh is a very generous man, you wouldn't care to let us all in on the location of his shop Iain. Had a spare afternoon yesterday and watched Quatermass 1&2 (2 still my favourite).

Quatermass 2 - one of the finest British SF pics ever - love the Q films as well as the Q wannabe "X the Unknown!"
