Description

George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, died in the master bedroom at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799. In his will, he directed that he be buried on his beloved Mount Vernon estate, in the state of Virginia, USA. He also selected a site for a new brick tomb to replace the original burial vault, which was deteriorating. The tomb was completed in 1831 and Washington's body was moved there along with the remains of his wife, Martha, and other family members. To steal a quote from Manus Hand you can see the sarcophagus containing the man who was "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." There was no guard, at the time of my visit - just a brick tomb with an iron metal gate at the opening. Then an iron fence surrounded the tomb and that gate was also wide open. Originally, Washington was to be buried, two floors under the US Capital building but his will over ruled that plan. Some info from the Mount Vernon and Wikipedia web sites. The inscription over the door reads (to the best of my memory): Within this Enclosure Rest The remains of Gen George Washington Photo taken in the mid 1980s and later scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Perfect POV of the tomb, with interesting info in re the Father of our Country. BTW, the junior high school I attended many decades ago was named Mount Vernon.
