Description

Since joining Rendo, I never leave home without a camera. But it has still taken awhile to be sure I have one in my hand on a commercial flight. I have been in 49 of our 50 states but never have been to see the Grand Canyon (in northern Arizona). So, on the departure flight from Las Vegas to Denver, I was mildly shocked to look out the window some 15-20 minutes after takeoff and see the scene in this upload! The United Airlines Boeing 757 was following an air route just north of the North Rim of the canyon. We were headed for 37,000 feet but hadn't reached that altitude yet. I took at least 60-70 shots out the window along the entire flight with my polarizing filter on the camera. A combination of my filter and the polarized window probably is the cause of the blue tint that I've been able to reduce via postwork but not eliminate altogether. Hope those of you who have never seen Grand Canyon will enjoy this and all of you will never sit in an aisle seat again. LOL. Bill:) P.S., The river in the photo is the Colorado River credited with having cut the canyon in the first place. Lots of debate about how long it took. P.S.S., How deep and how wide? Width and depth of the Canyon vary from place to place. At the South Rim, near Grand Canyon Village, it's a vertical mile (about 5,000 feet / 1524 m) from rim to river (7 miles / 11.3 km by trail, if you're walking). At its deepest, it is 6000 vertical feet / 1829 m from rim to river. The width of the canyon at Grand Canyon Village is 10 miles / 16 km (rim to rim), though in places it is as much as 18 miles / 29 km wide. "Milestone 600" thumb_2022525.jpg

Wow...have never seen the Grand Canyon...well, at least this one. Did visit some Hawaiian islands on our honeymoon and on Kaui we visited the Grandy Canyon of the Pacific. Both look spectacular!

I lived in Arizona for 13 years and never got to the Grand Canyon. I did get there in the early 70's, and saw just a very little bit of it. This is a spectacular foto-and yeah, I ALWAYS get a window seat for this very reason. In fact, I just posted a shot I took a couple of years ago somewhere over New Mexico.

Wow, Bill, nice aerial shot - it is indeed a GRAND Canyon! I've been there, a long time ago, but this view is amazing! I always get a window seat whenever possible. Great capture! I got a really neat shot of downtown Chicago a few years ago - I'll have to find it and post it ;-)

I too always like a window seat for the same reason. Even over the ocean there is heaps to see. I like this view of the canyon with all the craggy details and the snowy tops.

Wow! The blue tint looks kinda cool, it adds the the other worldlyness of the place. Spectacular POV, I would never consider an aisle seat. I hope you post some more.

Neat overhead shot of the awesome Grand Canyon, which I have stood on the rim of, looking down in awe, despite my acrophobia. I wonder if you could have eliminated the blue tint by use of the PS color balance tool, that I have used in the past. I know this is one big vast natural wonder, but it doesn't compare in size with the Valles Marineris on the planet Mars. It makes the Grand Canyon look like a ditch in comparison. Valles Marineris (Latin for Mariner Valleys, named after the Mariner 9 Mars orbiter of 1971–72 which discovered it) is a system that runs along the Martian east of the Tharsis region. At more than 4,000 km long, 200 km wide and up to 7 km deep, the Valles Marineris rift system is larger than any of Earth's largest canyons, and is the largest known canyon in the solar system. for sure when I fly to Vegas I ask for window and got my camera in tow.usually the windows are scratched and discolored but one trip I was on a new jet and it was clean all the way from Dallas to there.sometimes I am on the wrong side of the jet to see the canyon but that time I had an unobstructed view excellent shot.did you win in Vegas

The Grand Canyon is a wonderful place. I have a heap of shots here I must post. I've seen it from a helicopter, whilst trekking it and also from a mule, but never from this high up. Thanks so much for posting it Bill. I've never been there when it has been snowing.
