Description

Since joining Rendo, I never leave home without a camera. But it has still taken awhile to be sure I have one in my hand on a commercial flight. I have been in 49 of our 50 states but never have been to see the Grand Canyon (in northern Arizona). So, on the departure flight from Las Vegas to Denver, I was mildly shocked to look out the window some 15-20 minutes after takeoff and see the scene in this upload! The United Airlines Boeing 757 was following an air route just north of the North Rim of the canyon. We were headed for 37,000 feet but hadn't reached that altitude yet. I took at least 60-70 shots out the window along the entire flight with my polarizing filter on the camera. A combination of my filter and the polarized window probably is the cause of the blue tint that I've been able to reduce via postwork but not eliminate altogether. Hope those of you who have never seen Grand Canyon will enjoy this and all of you will never sit in an aisle seat again. LOL. Bill:) P.S., The river in the photo is the Colorado River credited with having cut the canyon in the first place. Lots of debate about how long it took. P.S.S., How deep and how wide? Width and depth of the Canyon vary from place to place. At the South Rim, near Grand Canyon Village, it's a vertical mile (about 5,000 feet / 1524 m) from rim to river (7 miles / 11.3 km by trail, if you're walking). At its deepest, it is 6000 vertical feet / 1829 m from rim to river. The width of the canyon at Grand Canyon Village is 10 miles / 16 km (rim to rim), though in places it is as much as 18 miles / 29 km wide. "Milestone 600" thumb_2022525.jpg

Now what after the Grand Canyon, what's next? Mars is available! ;) It's 50 times as far from the bottom to the top of the canyon as it is from the top to the bottom!!

I never sit on the aisle, and I can't help but take pictures out the window! It's a sickness, I tell you. LOL! I've never seen the Grand Canyon, either from the air or the ground. What a gorgeous sight! Thank you for sharing this.

Before I left Prague, the parents of a friend of mine made a trip to the USA and found themselves IN the Grand Canyon, and also on the California coast some time later. Being Czech, they never saw as much water as the Pacific ocean provided, nor had they ever seen "so deep a hole" as the Grand Canyon, and now whenever I think of the Pacific Ocean OR the Grand Canyon, I think of Marek and Jana getting googley eyes while describing their trip. This is a great shot and I rather like the polarized blue. I love flights and yes, whenever I fly, I try to take my camera with me, though alas--my last flight was taken without a camera as the one I originally had is now dead, lifeless, and non-working and probably in the bottom of my friend Pavl's sock drawer. Ah, but my NEXT flight will involve a window seat, charged batteries (and spare ones) and a keen eye hunting for interesting subjects, just as long as the airplane engine doesn't get in the way.

It's one of the best, if brief moments flying out of Vegas with a port side seat! Lovely view.
