Description

Not one of my best photos but I thought I would share it anyway. Taken at a kit car show in dettling, this is Kevin Carmichael, an extreme stunt rider. He was awesome on the day even if he was limited by space. I've done a bit of motorsport photography but this guy was hard to shoot. With car shots it's fairly easy to create this type of shot as generally speaking you're main focus point is the car itself. With a longer shutter speed and some careful panning, it's easy to create a sense of speed. With a biker however, it's not so easy to keep the bike and the rider in sharp focus as they are both moving independently. I found I needed to increase the shutter speed a little to get decent results. This shot was one of the simpler ones as although its still an insane manouver, the rider and passenger remained in fairly static positions. On the day, I wished I had a longer zoom or could have got closer to the action as most of the more daring stunts were performed further away. This is quite an old photo now and was taken with my kit lens. I now have an L series zoom lens so would love to catch this guy again at some point for some real quality results :) More shots from this day can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/thurcombe/sets/72157622362103727/ Not sure if linking to flickr is frowned upon here but if it's a problem I will remove the link :) As always, +/- feedback appreciated.

I recently went to the practice dirt track with my grandson to photograph the riders. I thought it would be fairly easy...find a spot and wait for something to come into the frame and click. Wrong! The speed combined with the motion of the camera will try the patience of the best. I have scores of shots that were too blurred where they needed to be crisp and visa versa. I came away with only 3 shots that had any merit...and not much of that. Great job on this one.
