Description

I have received a number of funny site mails, about my comments, about alligators sleeping under the trees and bushes, at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, so this photo was taken on March 1st. Chicks of all breeds fall out of nests and/or as they develop, the more dominant chick will even push its siblings out, so that the remaining chick gets all the food. Gators are sedentary creatures and dont waste a lot of energy on a daily basis. They do not have to eat every day. They can go weeks without eating. They are not the eating machines that TV and movies portray them. Waiting under a large bush with multiple nests, of large birds, is an efficient way to "hunt" without wasting a lot of energy. After all, these chicks are getting large but can't fly yet. That is an Anhinga swimming behind the alligators and it is not in much danger from those two gators. It is not worth the energy, to chase the Anhinga, in hope of actually catching it. At any hint of danger, the Anhinga is airborne. OK class that is the lesson for today and your assignment is to leave a comment. :>) Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Those birds are instictive but not smart on their own. My second husband hooked one on the bottom of the ocean while fishing one time. :-) I love the alligators. They are very well fed!

I think the big one is smiling - I immagine he get his way - Oh - I know - when those people put thier heads in the gators mouth on perpose - are those gators domesticated or are those people just really stupid ! - I like your photo's alot much more realistic feel than TV - At least enough so that I have no urge at all to have to see any more or get within bitting distance :) - TAKE CARE -

Excellent shot of the sedentary reptiles just taking it easy, and interesting information on their eating habits in this posting, Dana.

Wow, that's a really big motivator to be the dominant chick; how awful to grow up wondering if you're going to be lunch! Great shot, Dana!

I actually saw a show on the Discovery Channel showing a nesting spot for various species of birds such as storks, egrets and others...and yes, the babies do sometimes fall or a sibling will push it out of the nest...and there are hungry mouths waiting below. Tis the way of things in nature! Good shot!!

they also hit the trees at time with they tails hopeing to make a chick fall out the nest. The birds make the nest there knowing or it just instict for them to know the gators will protect they nest too from the small mammals that will try to get to the chicks and the eggs too. So the gators just have to lay around and wait for the food to come to them. What a live to live!
