Description
This is the statue of the Greek philosopher 'Democritus meditating on the seat of the soul' (Démocrite méditant sur le siège de l'ame) by Léon-Alexandre Delhomme (1841-1895), exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1868. It is now exhibited in the garden of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.On its base is inscribed an extract from the 29th fable of La Fontaine:'Hippocrates in time arrived at the conclusion that he had not sought whether the heart or the head was the seat of either reason or sense in man and beast.'
It makes also me think, however, of Yorick. Yorick was the deceased court jester whose skull is exhumed by the gravedigger in Act 5, Scene 1, of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The sight of Yorick's skull evokes a monologue from Prince Hamlet on the vile effects of death. The opening words are very commonly misquoted as 'Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him well.'
Thank you for your kind comments.

Fadcinating that the French have this aversion to grass in public places! here the statue would have a little grass island and then the path and seats!

That face is really great...it makes me smile. The mood is pensive, thought provoking and then there is that one face that stands out. :-) Wonderful!

winter like weather, still people sit on the benches, relaxing, taking in the moments...the cool, crisp air, flowing in and ot of their lungs, rejuvenating, re-building... the statue thinks on his skull, gazing into empty eyes, looking for answers... ancient and unknown... stellar image!
