Description

Hello everyone and thanks for looking... From time to time, one of our fellow Rendo artists will post a picture then get comments from some disgruntled member that makes the artist stop and reconsider just why they should be posting their work in the first place. It seems every other week someone here is saying they're gonna take down their gallery because some talentless hack decided to send a flaming comment. Personally, I enjoy seeing the negative comments, because that tells me where I need to improve, and gives me something new to work on. For some of our friends here, posting their art is a very personal expression, and they don't take criticism in the same way. It takes a certain amount of courage to post something that you've worked on, put a little heart and soul into, and let others criticize it. For some, those comments can be pretty important to their self esteem, and their desire to post anything again. Folks even take offence if the commenter hasn't written a huge book about their work, and tend to look down on the "Nice job!" comments, too. Does anyone out there know how many pictures get uploaded to Rendo each day? I'm betting it's more than a couple hundred. Who's got time to write a book on every one, and still let folks know they've seen it? For all my friends out there, please don't take offence if folks give you a bad review. Think of it as constructive criticism. If you get a short comment, well at least the poor slob bothered to look at your work! And if you think someone's work could be better, why not tell 'em what you liked about it, what they could improve on, and if you'd like to see more of their stuff? Oh well, that's my rant for the day. What do you think? I double dog dare you to leave a comment! ^_^ Tom, Seaview123 P.S.-- Can anyone tell me why everyone wants you to view their pictures in full size? Is there a special prize that's given out for that? Does Rendo send you money if your picture gets full sized more than others? Really, I'd like to know! P.P.S.-- Check out my picture in FULL SIZE! You'll be glad you did! That's definitely a fearless rant, Tom. But I like your insight and opinion. Constructive criticism depends on how it was said and if it does really makes sense, it's something to consider. A very nice portrayal, her stance looks like she means business here. A top-notch work, I know you always go for perfection and I see that in your works. :-D

Here, here!!! I am with you, my friend! And I think Rendo should just show everything in full view to begin with! Love your dragon (is it a sea dragon come ashore?) Your stunning heroine may need more than just a sword if it gets ugly! Great work!

Well I wont write a book LOL. A small comment or a long one all are nice when given in an honest way right. I agree constructive feedback I say is always good when given with that intend. It's easy to say what is wrong with something but takes effort to share how to improve. It also depends why someone makes art, just for fun and he/she is happy or maybe to learn. Well I stop and say I like your work

Cool image Tom and it looks like she could stand up to anything. As for your thoughts on critical comments they can be a big help for those wanting to improve who ask for them and then only if they are presented in a constructive way. What has been happening lately here is a simple matter of some small minded people who are bitter or jealous attacking members with the intent of hurting and or scaring them off.

Lately, I find myself with less and less time to comment on the pictures that I view. Often I will spend ten minutes looking at a picture, and leave a mere couple of words. This is not because I don't appreciate the piece, it's because I genuinely don't have anything constructive to say about it. The comments I do leave are usually with regard to the FEEL of a piece, rather than the technique. I don't believe art is sbout technique, its not about technology and its not about how many pretty lights you can put in a scene. I trained at college as a Fine Artist, but I didn't forget to look at things I like... ITS ALL ABOUT EXPRESSION, and we all express ourselves in different ways. Often, beauty is about the flaws, the mistakes and the lucky breaks. That's what I look for. Feeling... As much as its true for art, its also true for commentary ON that art. We all have different ways of expression. I believe that if you INVITE comment, you shouls ACCEPT comment, good or bad, and learn from it. One word or twenty, makes no difference, the important thing is people are MOVED TO COMMENT and are LOOKING! As for your picture Tom,.... Nice:-) (Looks good full size!!)

This image rocks in so many ways. I would assume that she has a severe head cold, as dragon breath is horrible beyond belief, and she knows the weak spot on this dragon, else-wise why would she stand as she is. and of course she's gotta have a backup plan, just in case... I'm all for constructive criticism when presented as such. if there is a serious issue, ie hair growing in areas that defy imagination, clothing looking a bit odd, then I site mail them with the suggestion and if I'm able to, offer a way to fix the issue.

It was a dark and stormy night...there, at least I started a book. But then I looked at this in full size and completely lost my train of thought. That babe has got attitude!

(Psst, if you want full views, do things like put your character in awesome boots or have a fancy sword hilt they will want to look at up close;) I hide stuff in mine you can't see on small view! (Though mostly I'm glad they look at all;) Another nice scene--she does look fearless in that pose, and I love the boots, especially on large view;)

Love that pose and her steely expression. I'm guessing she'll carve him into sushi! Gotta agree with your rant. How many visitors to real world art galleries bother to write to the artist? Most viewers don't comment. Nothing wrong with that. They get to see more artwork. I'm happy with a simple "nice work" comment. I look at short comments as visiting cards. Someone has seen your work and told you they like it. That said "very nice work" is even better, lol! I always maintain that if an artist doesn't want any criticism they have the option to tick the box when posting. After all why ignore all of the nice comments and pack your bags when someone disagrees? I'm not in any way suggesting that folk trash my work BTW, there are other sites you know, so there! Here endeth the rant...

Nice picture. Certainly a brave girl. Interesting point you make. People need to set their criticism dials to 30%. By that I mean give some acknowledgement to criticism but not much. Do pictures primarily for your own enjoyment. Very few of us are going to do commercial work or become Boris Vallejo. But its interesting to know which pictures the public like and do not. Otherwise you end up doing art like the Tate bricks or a room with a light flashing on and off. To most of the public this art is totally crap but it fools the art establishment. As for giving criticm my advice would be don't. Even if its meant well as a sincere attempt to improve someones art, it wont be taken that way. You have to know someone pretty well before you can risk it.

Well, sometimes I only have time for a short comment. If the image looks good, I say so. :) Sometimes my hands hurt too bad to leave comments so I just look. If I see something that I'm wondering about or a way to make it look even better, I'll say so. :) Having said all that I'll now say something about this image. I love her stance, gives the impression of a firm attitude. Well done.

Lovely scene Tom.. She looks like she can handle the beast.. well done.. Now regarding your rant .. Yes its nice to receive the praise on a piece but at the same time expect some neg feed back or "suggestions" from others. If I get it I may take it on board and I may not, often I go and see what that persons work is like if its way good I listen if its "crappy" I think what do they know, unless it is a good suggestion/idea for the work. Sure I think we all want to get better.. If you don't want to be receiving criticism untick the box folk.. then people cant leave comments.. Re full size view, if its made big maybe thats how the artist wants it viewed to get the best out of it. By saying full view it then maybe they know you will see all the little details that you wouldn't see in the normal size rendo sizes it too. There are some beautiful works that I would love to see in large size and I click Zoom and it doesn't change grrr thats annoying lol your straining the old eyes to make things out and they warrant a large view. Guess the artist cant upload big files I don't know.. anyway enough from me so here endith the rave..

a few hundred??? I've uploaded and gone back and forth to the new pictures and watch one come in every other minute... we're talking THOUSANDS hit here each day... let's do some math (lol)... I've wanted to do this for a while anyway... ok, not thousands - lol I went with a low figure, 1 upload every other minute... 30 uploads an hour(I've seen it) ...30 X 24 hours = 720... It's a safe bet on that figure. Criticle comments? Well, I say what comes to mind when viewing and I never want to hurt anyone, but I have been told by some they don't care for my comments and have spent WAY TOO MUCH time commenting... so much, I probably spend at least 2 hours out of my day doing it... I have neglected doing art and learning my poser program.... I just ordered a video through curious labs on poser6 from start to finish, so soon, I will be cutting my commenting down big time. Last person I heard that was going to leave because of comments was adrie... never knew her... eekdog mentioned she was leaving, so I visited her... I feel what I said in her comment section helped big time... she wrote me and said thank you - she has been posting and has had 1st,2nd and 3 place tied up in the art charts = on top of that, she just had a birthday, so has been getting lots of dedis... I enjoy commenting, but I know soon I will have to devote more time to other things in life, so if you don't hear from me as much in the future, remember what I told you here... I really like your work and I feel it has really been advancing.

An appropriate scene to go along with your rant. I agree, it's hard to take criticism sometimes, but you can't please everyone. I also take both good and bad comments into consideration. Sometimes I change my work because of it (if it makes sense). If it doesn't make senses, I file it away in the recycle bin in my mind and move on.

Tom Great scene as always. As for comments and critiques I love them and hope I would get more. I'm an exhibitionist when it comes to my art as I believe we all are That's the reason we post. some like myself invite critiques as it helps drive me to be better at what I do but ultimately (unless there is something obvious like poke through etc) it's just that's persons OPINION after viewing your/mine or any piece of work for that matter. You may or may not agree with their views especially if they don't know how to present their thoughts in a constructive way. I simply ignore them. It's not worth getting worked up over. That said... Tom again great render, keep em coming.

I've got between 25-50 artist in my favorite list who post per day. Writing a book on each of their work is impossible, unless I don't DO anything else but write comments. Unfortunately that's mean that I have no time left for my own work. This is very nice! I can't say that it touches any deep chords in my soul, but I can see that you put time and effort into it, and that in itself deserves recognition! DO keep up the good work! dph PS: I checked this out in FULL SIZE, and yes, the woman definitely looked SEXIER than in the smaller size!!!!

Yup, she's a babe all right! Yoiks, I agree with You, and Mikeerson (and chasfh) make very good points. I really don't know how many images I look per day, but there's only so much a fellow can say, and only so many ways to say something. As to 2 word comments...at least someone stopped to say "Hi I was here". I appreciate that. And If someone views my image full size, then they wanted to see detail...if not, they weren't all that interested. either one is fine by me. It just makes the longer comments and full sized views all the better. And If someone takes the time to critique me, I take that as a compliment that they take my efforts seriously. Oh, and I did look at your image full sized...I demand a cookie!

i totally agree with chasf,i view an image with my heart if i may say so,thye image has to provoke a reaction and upon this feeling i usually write my comments. as for the techniques ,there are so many and all is so versatile, the main thing is you have fun and this fun will be projected in the image and then you achieved all ready a lot. i always say when i make someone smile only one on the other end of the globe, with my works then i achieved my goal already if you know what i mean. i have the deepest of respect to all the visitors who come and visit the galleries, and spend a huge amount of time doing that. some are even so great that when they where abroad for a few days or unable to comment they catch up on 10 images wich i posted before and i take my hat off out of respect. and then sometimes a couple of words are more deep then a complete book indeed. very nice btw.i do have that zuum....... figure as well rotting away in my runtime lol
