Description

I inadvertently took a week off from posting. Never buy a complete season of an old TV show you like on DVD and expect to get anything else done! Especially, if it's the first season of a show, with the Pilot, 25 episodes and special features. In this case, Hawaii Five-O. I wouldn't call HFO one of my all time favorites, but it is a show I've always been passively fond of. For a kid who came of age in the 1970s, it's nicely nostalgic. It's interesting to see a show you watched as a kid through adult eyes. I wouldn't call HFO "camp." It's a little too restrained for that, but it is deliciously dated and rather seductive. You've got warm, exotic scenery, cute Hawaiian boys, nasty villains doing horrible things amid the warm, exotic scenery. You've also got one of the earlier versions of an interracial, ensemble cast, fab guest stars, and bit players who later became stars...warm exotic scenery...granite- faced Jack Lord screeching through the warm, exotic scenery in his shiny black Mercury Park Lane, barking orders into his car phone and then reciting his iconic catch phrase after the apprehension of that week's killer(s): "Book 'em Dano--Murder One." and of course one of the best TV theme songs in the history of the universe. (Chip and I have been humming it for days now.) And did I mention the warm, exotic scenery? It's winter in Chicago, I need all the warm, exotic scenery I can get. Meanwhile, onto this picture: This is the Belmont Avenue, Howard/Red Line train station from street level. When you're coming from other parts of the city, on the train, this is the gateway into Lakeview's "Boy's Town." You can feel the queer vibe when you leave the station and it gets ever more gay as you head east to Halsted Street. It's also another great place to feel the hyper-kenetic hustle/bustle of Chicago, as well as the Famous Wind blowing in off nearby Lake Michigan. It's a wind that's often bitterly cold this time of year. As I recall, when I made this picture in late January, it was pretty, killer-ly...the kind of bone-chilling, shivery cold that makes you want to go home, jump under the blankets and watch old TV shows with warm, exotic scenery.

This is a most satisfying pic even without your commentary, full of interest and with a spot-on compo. 'You can feel the queer vibe'...I love that idea! even though I live in the town with the second largest gay community in the South of England I haven't noticed such a thing as yet! I have bought a boxed set of all 37 Shakespeare plays by the BBC, and I may watch one a fortnight. I suffer from 'Denoument Deficiency Disorder'..that is, I fall asleeep just before all is revealed, or in the case of most of Williams plays, before they all make lengthy deaths. So, having just finished a sweater, I can't watch until I've set up some fresh knitting which will keep me awake!

busy down town at night, trains going by and cars and all the different lights...like the mood of it. As to the dvd and looking all episodes...I only have done that once and it even wasn't a show I have seen as a kid. It came as an recommendation from my sister, who is living in Australia. They get some British TV series over there, which we, although nearer by, don't get and she favored one especially, because of the humor. It's called "Monarch of the Glen" and tells stories about an old Scottish Laird in a derelict manor and his son, trying to keep the heritage together in our times. I had to watch them all, cause I fell for the scottish accent and the special humor of some very special characters.

I was visiting my sister a few months ago and she and her family REALLY wanted me to watch a movie with them. I fell asleep at the opening credits and woke as it ended. I may have the same "DDD" Andrea suffers from. But, I digress (nothing new)--this is a great shot and I'm starting to recognize Chicago pretty well. Saw a show (ok, HGTV, my secret vice) just the other night that was in your town and knew it right away, mostly because of scenes just like this--a road and the El. Super shot and another great story!!

I like this very much! Not only does it say "Chicago" loud and clear, but it's got great light, a nice amount of motion and action, and excellent composition. I've got some DVDs here too, courtesy of a friend who owns the boxed set, of Battlestar Galactica ... and you KNOW who thought I should watch THAT one! LOL! Well, I'm enjoying it immensely, but I'm only watching a couple of hours a week. There are all sorts of things that get in the way of me watching more. I'm glad you're enjoying the warm exotic scenery of Hawaii Five-O! It should keep you nice and toasty through what's left of the cold Chicago winter.

I missed commenting on this which is weird since I remember exactly when you posted this. Can you say brain fart...well. Now that it's passed, I'm seeing this now and I like it a lot. I didn't think that el-renovation thing would ever end...and now that it's ended, I actually like the result. This is a gorgeous shot and I love the sleek, urban feel of it. Night shots are so much fun and this one is as much fun to look at. Great stuff.
