Description

Been trying to capture this pose for ages. He is still along way out in the lake, so required the 500mm lens. This image is going to live in my memory for a long time. First off a puncture on the way to the park. Second, after half an hour I couldn't feel the ends of my fingers. The sun was out but the wind was very cold. So had to cut the trip short. Got back to the car and my fingers were so painful felt like cutting them off. Guess poor circulation is the cause of that. Less ciggies and beer maybe? Nah, a decent pair of gloves more likely. Then stopping off at a garage cost me £90 for a new tyre as the puncture hole was too large to fix. A picture paints a thousand words? This one does for me more than you the viewer. Who needs a diary when you have a camera with you?

I like this - so typical of them drying out for the next flight. Great story on the effort to capture this wonderful composition too! Well done, Clive

So true about memories held in a pic. The same with knitting..I can remember some of what I watched while I did it..brings back the plots!

Nice shot and worth it! Don't give up the ciggies, just hold them closer to the ends of your fingers and maybe light several, ha ha!

Fantastic picture for the distance involved. You can see his/her neck colour perfectly. We had a load of Cormorants on our local pond last year (much to the chagrin of the fishing club) but they do tend to keep their distance and it was always a dull day when I was around,so although I took some pics, they weren,t up to much.

Great shot, and all the rest was done in the name of adventure.....which was money well spent!

The work that's involved in getting that great shot makes it worth it.

I don't have the camera you have or the lens to match but I was able to get some shots very similar to this over the weekend. I haven't downloaded them, but when I do, later this week, and post one or two, I'd like you opinion. You seem to know what you are doing. :-)

Wonderful! The background is as interesting as the photo itself. That and the anthropologist and ESL-teacher in me is fascinated by your spelling of the word "tyre" in American, you replace the "y" with an "i" which reveals loads of all sorts of cultural assumptions and such...and well...that obscure and arcane stuff really comes in handy when you're teaching English to a classroom full of guys named Honza, who get really upset when you intentionally call their country "Czechoslovakia," just to see them turn all sorts of interesting shades of red. Of course they take you out for beer later, then laugh--mercilessly at your woeful attempts to speak Czech without sounding like a Polish Russian with a speech impediment (a hilarious sin in Prague, among guys named Honza...and apparently I speak both Russian and Czech like a retarded three-year old...but I digress!) A picture is, indeed, worth more than a thousand words, and your commentary triggered this particular ranting spill of verbage. Oh well...that's what happens on occasion. As for this picture itself, it's wonderfully done and is worth all of the memories it triggers in both you and the viewer. The "Classic" avian pose is priceless and is enhanced by the light. I love the sense of color as well. This is a fantastic shot...well worth the cold fingers and the punctured tire...er...I mean...tyre. Great work!
