Description
Olulu Brighamia insignis, native to Kauai, Hawaiian Islands.
Captured 10/3/09, mid day, at the beautiful San Diego Botanic Garden, in beautiful Encinitas, just north of beautiful San Diego, California.
This is one of the most unusual plants in Hawaii. Once common, they are almost extinct, and grow on cliffs in Kauai.
The Latin insignis means "remarkable," which is a particularly apt epithet for this plant, long considered one of the most unusual and interesting plants of the Hawaiian flora. This member of the perennial Bellflower family (Campanulaceae) is one of two morphologically similar species in the genus Brighamia, B. insignis and B. rockii. Olulu possesses a thick, succulent stem that is swollen at the base, tapers towards the apex, and is crowned by a dense rosette of fleshy leaves. These plants are usually single-stemmed, although individuals have been observed with as many as four heads. Flowers are cream to yellow in colour and salverform (trumpet shaped). Clustered into groups of three to eight, the olulu flowers possess a fragrance that resembles mild honeysuckle.

now we know more about this plant which is wonderful. like when i was growing up I walked the woods and saw the trees. and that all they was but then I started to learn the trees name and some of them I could eat [like the pine I can take off the bark and eat the find hairs you find just under the bark to live;will taste like pine oil but you live] Now I walk and see the names of each tree I know and plants too and I more happy to know them to.

Great information to go with these lovely clear pics, Harry! For me the knowledge always enhances the experience, but I know that's not so for everyone. I think they look a lot like cabbage, so it was doubly interesting!
