Description

This shot was taken from the window of my hotel in the Part-Dieu district of Lyon, France. I was at the 5th floor, and fortunately the area in front of the hotel was at the first stage of a building construction, so I could command a view as far as the other side of the city, the Fourviere Hill. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere was built with private funds between 1872 and 1896 in a dominating position in the city, as a mark of the triumph of Christian values over the Socialists of the Lyon Commune of 1870. Its design, by Pierre Bossan, draws from both Romanesque and Byzantine architecture, two non-Gothic models that were unusual choices at the time. The site it occupies was once the Roman forum of emperor Trajan. Perched on top of the hill, the basilica looms impressively over the city; not unintentionally, the basilica has become a symbol of the city of Lyon. The Tour metallique de Fourviere (Metallic tower of Fourviere), is also a landmark of Lyon. It's a steel framework tower which bears a striking resemblance to the Eiffel Tower. With a height of 85.9 metres, it was built between 1892 and 1894 also with private funds. Its construction was assisted by the local Town council who wanted to build a secular monument to counterbalance the Catholic Basilica which is less than a hundred metres away. From a lay point of view, this battle of political statements by means of monuments is typically European. From afar the skyline looks a bit Disneyan ante litteram with its fin-de-siecle kitsch. Thank you for your kind comments.

We can not understand the history of Lyon, if we forget the Catholic tradition that made Lyon a free or forced residence of some popes. Similarly one can understand the role of Lyonnais in our history (from France), if we forget that Lyon could be the capital of France; Hence the hubris of people to their city, streets , stairways, alleys, the cuisine ... but Lyon was in fact a place of great passages of different cultures, or Nantes and Lille, or Marseille or Bordeaux or Bayonne same regardless of Strasbourg Paris, can also boast same criteria of quality ...! It is this trait that always tickles me about Lyon. by cons I am happy to learn many things with you! Thank you Sandra!

I like the composition here where the city buildings are subordinate to the sky. Your post work is excellent and gives the image a painted look.
