Description

This shot was taken from the window of my hotel in the Part-Dieu district of Lyon, France. I was at the 5th floor, and fortunately the area in front of the hotel was at the first stage of a building construction, so I could command a view as far as the other side of the city, the Fourviere Hill. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere was built with private funds between 1872 and 1896 in a dominating position in the city, as a mark of the triumph of Christian values over the Socialists of the Lyon Commune of 1870. Its design, by Pierre Bossan, draws from both Romanesque and Byzantine architecture, two non-Gothic models that were unusual choices at the time. The site it occupies was once the Roman forum of emperor Trajan. Perched on top of the hill, the basilica looms impressively over the city; not unintentionally, the basilica has become a symbol of the city of Lyon. The Tour metallique de Fourviere (Metallic tower of Fourviere), is also a landmark of Lyon. It's a steel framework tower which bears a striking resemblance to the Eiffel Tower. With a height of 85.9 metres, it was built between 1892 and 1894 also with private funds. Its construction was assisted by the local Town council who wanted to build a secular monument to counterbalance the Catholic Basilica which is less than a hundred metres away. From a lay point of view, this battle of political statements by means of monuments is typically European. From afar the skyline looks a bit Disneyan ante litteram with its fin-de-siecle kitsch. Thank you for your kind comments.

churches, by design were constructed either on tops of hills looking down on the people, or in the centre of towns, where people would have to pass daily on their way to wherever they were going... this way, the church was a daily constant in your lives...

A monumental war of architecture. Very interesting history! You certainly had a room with a view! Excellent capture and postwork! Love the expansive sky and the painted effects!
