Description
Mulk, Kinna, and Metla watched Joshua stand on top of the Runner, with a bottle of War Wine in each hand. He would speak a name, and drink deeply from one of the bottles. After eight swigs he'd emptied one bottle and dropped it, letting it slide down the hull to the ground to shatter. Then lifting the other he shouted.
"To Jacob Benjamin Wu! Commando, friend, and uncle. I will see you on the other side." He then downed a third of the liquid. After several seconds, Joshua slowly shook his head and drank deeply again.
"To Sasha Marie Marx! Commando, friend, and mother of our daughter. You also, will I see on the other side." He shouted. With a pause, he downed the rest of the War Wine and dropped that bottle as well. Metla gasped.
"What's wrong Metla?" Mulk asked.
She looked at her friends. "His heart is breaking."
They turned back to Joshua who had hung his head. Throwing it back in a quick jerk, he roared to the sky. Then he shouted out in a language they didn't understand, his arms held out. Dropping his arms he then began to sing, again in the unknown tongue. After several minutes he finished, sat down, and fell asleep. Mulk then Force jumped from the walkway that ran alongside the Runner to the top of the ship and strode to him. Picking him up, he carried him to the dorsal airlock and took Joshua to the Rat's Nest.
A dozen Mandalorians who had been watching nodded their heads in a salute to the man. They were all too familiar with the emotions that he was feeling. They'd all lost comrades over the years, and they've all done the same thing themselves. They also knew that they will do so again, for such was the nature of their world. They then went about their lives.
When Mulk came out of the Rat's Nest, the Mazuran found Peenk with Kinna and Metla at the computer. They were looking at an image of Joshua and nine other men and five women. The men were all in black form fitting uniforms, the women in white. All were grinning for the camera. Peenk shook her head sadly.
"They look so damn young!" She whispered. "And Joshua was the only one to come back alive from Teros 6."
"But who was he talking about in that other language?" Kinna wondered.
"Khindie." Melee said as she entered the bridge.
"Did you watch him out there Melee?" Mulk asked.
Melee nodded, sitting at the computer. "It's the anniversary of the end of the war with the Dominion. That's the day that Khindie died saving a ship called the Fist of Kahless. She was a nurse. She and one of the ship's doctors barred Jem Hadar boarders from the engineering section of the ship, and in doing so prevented them from taking control. The doctor killed thirty one of them, while Khindie killed thirty eight. Klingons seldom have funerals for their dead. They held a state funeral for Khindie and Barash, the doctor she fell alongside."
Melee brought up an image of thousands of Klingon warriors. All facing a stage. On it lay two caskets. An image of what appeared to be Joshua stood over one, blood dripping from his fist onto it.
"What is Joshua doing?" Peenk asked.
"That's not Joshua. It's his father. And he's performing the Ceremony of Adoption for Barash. You see, he was an orphan. So Joshua's father is standing in for his son and adopting him into his house. They adopted him because he was the first doctor to treat Joshua after he escaped from Teros 6, and for his actions on that ship."
