Description

The heart of the mill. There are two sets of stones, one in the round wood cowling in the background is connected and ready to use. The other set is in the open where the faces can be dressed to repair the wear of use. Each stone is 18 inches thick and 48 inches in diameter. If you look past the pattern of grinding edges cut into the face, you can see lines that reveal the stone is composed of very closely fitted limestone blocks, held in place by the heavy outer steel band. I think this whole mill is a wonderful example of 19th century technology and artisanship. Previously;
