Description

From my Babylon 5 collection and for your enjoyment today here's an Earth Alliance Omega Class Warship in Earth orbit. Going to ask the same question again as I did yesterday as it sets you up for the new series of series I will be showcasing here soon. How do they get all the big parts of that big warship into Earth orbit so they can put them together? There's just no way that big warship could lift from the surface of the Earth in one piece.

This looks BIG, great render. As to your problem....Helium Balloons...lots and lots and lots and lots....you get the idea :) I suppose you could build the ship and then vapourise the Earth, might make homecomings a bit of a drag though.

Cool render and space scene. The image is missing something that would solidify the large size of the warship. I think a smaller ship flying towards it would do that. A slight curvature to the planet might add something too!

I always loved the design of those ships, this looks so cool. My personal bet on how they were built is that probably most of the materials didn't come from Earth: either mined from the moon or from asteroids, would be my suggestion. Nice piece, here.

Great B5 ship! Why, they build 'em in orbit!

Great render....There are multiple shipyards in orbit around Earth. Each piece is lifted by multiple shuttles to the proper shipyard.

Very nicely done. Now, in regards to your question. The science fiction series Babylon Five depicted an industrialized civilization spread all across the solar system -- such large vehicles need not be constructed on earths surface, they would be fabricated in orbit. In reality long before we reach that stage we will need to alter our thinking and embrace other energy sources if we are ever to build such a vast (and economically successful) civilization. Before we tackle really large projects in space we require a commercial booster capable of lifting large masses of cargo, and engines capable of moving large masses across solar system distances. We currently posses the technology to construct a rocket booster capable of lifting Two Million Pounds of freight into orbit -- we merely lack the required will to use it. Before we accomplish this we need to re-educate (and dispel the myths) in regards to the safest, cleanest, long term sustainable, source of energy available: Nuclear Power. We designed, built, and tested more than 40 types of nuclear and nuclear thermal rockets between 1957 and 1972. Most of these out performed existing (and current) chemical rockets by a factor of 100 to 1. For exhaustive technical information I recommend: http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/index.html This is a highly necessary site if you are to write (or create any accurate models of advanced rockets and space craft) any serious science fiction. For information regarding the two million pound capable booster I recommend: http://www.nuclearspace.com/Liberty_ship_pg10.aspx For information regarding the intended post Apollo space program canceled by Richard Nixon in 1972 I recommend: http://beyondapollo.blogspot.com/2009/02/in-july-1969-as-apollo-11-brought.html I hope you find this helpful. Nicely done! The EA Destroyers have always been one of my favorite designs

Nice! My bet for construction would be that the materials were mined from near earth asteroids, refined in an orbital station and then assembled using some sort of fabrication technology (like the 3D printers that exist today, expect with metals or nanocarbons, not plastics)

Another great image I tend to agree that I always thought the ships were assembled in space - perhaps in the Asteroid belt
