Description

This is another in my Tangerine Period. So far this is only my second Tangerine post after "Tangerine Trees," so perhaps it's an actual blip rather than a full period--but I digress. I love the surreal quality of this shot. It looks, to me, like something out of a fever dream, or maybe one of those acid trips I've heard so much about...not that I'd personally know. The explanation for this picture is much more down-to-earth, and perhaps I shouldn't spoil the fun by revealing it, but here it goes. This is what happens when water vapor meets sodium vapor. I shot this on the Bernard Street footbridge over the Chicago River at about 1 in the morning as a heavy pea-soup fog rolled in. It was a lot of fun and rather exciting in that way that only weather can be. This picture was made on March 8th, 2010.

No, acid trips would tend to shatter the light into an array of hitherto never seen colours, er um.... This is quite spectacular to behold.

WOW!!! Powerful image even thought it is the mixing of fog and a single sodium vapor light. Dana

This is both interesting, yet kind of creepy. What creature could be waiting in the fog. Ooh, I could go with a shot like this. Awesome capture!

The explanation doesn't change anything regarding the image, but sure helped me figure out how you did it, fantastic capture!

Acid flashbacks, uh, but of course I don't know anything about those. It could be a still from a monster movie, the creature is just out of sight, waiting to get the next unsuspecting soul!! Great shot!!

Great shot and title. Yesterday, at sunset, the sun looked just like this sitting on the horizon. Of course, my camera was at home :P

Corey, this is a masterpiece. Stunning work. I was blown away from the thumbnail and the full size is breathtaking.

This reminds me of a piece of dialogue from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It was that old, Mexican guy recounting his UFO experience and also explaining how he got sunburn the night before. The guy translating for him spoke the words that come to mind now. "He says the sun came out last night." --dramatic pause-- "He says it sang to him." I loved that little snip of dialogue in the movie, and this image brought it to mind...as if the sun did come up on the night you took this, only because it was a UFO doing that whole UFO thing, which always happens while there's fog or any other less-than-favorable viewing condition. The image itself is stunning and I remember that night perfectly. The fog rolled in, settled in for a spell and stuck around for two whole days before leaving and returning later in the week. I love the high-pressure sodium-vapor orange, and the shadows piercing the fog itself, especially those anti-light rays that seem to mark the shadow in a three dimensional space. Great mood, especially with the capture of the shiny wood planks and girders. This is a great shot! I like your Tangerine Period. It's sexy.

I'm loving (or loved) your Tangerine Period! :D This is excellent. I really like what the light does to those wooden slats. Nicely spooky!

FANTASTIC! I love the pic, and I love the recollections caused by it. I was born long before the clean air act, and most nights in town looked a lot like this from autumn onwards. I had to push my bike across a footbridge SO much like this it's quite peculiar. The difference was that no-one could breath properly, as the atmosphere was toxic with sulphurous coal smoke. Long live your Tangerine period, Corey!

This is my favorite of your Tangerine Period so far. This is a beautiful shot, with wonderful lines, depth and light. The glowing wood grain, halos and rays of light, and ghostly trees are marvelous! I love the surreal elements too. A grim passage to a hellish world of heat and destruction. The way the horizontal lines become lighter as they come within reach of the blazing light and the blurring of definition of the bridge at the same time adds to the unreal feel. One reality is bleeding into another. This image again plays well with the tilting game. A dead green world with a rusted frame and a dying sun, turns into a dark hallway with a bloodstained floor leading to a punishing sun and then to the bridge where perhaps Charon awaits!
