Description
Horace, in his Odes invited: '... bewise, strain the wine, and scale back your long hopes,/to a short period. While we speak, envious time will have {already} fled/Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the next.'
In a more hard-nosed spirit, the English idiom to be 'led down the primrose path' suggests that one is being deceived or led astray, often by a hypocrite. The primrose path also refers to someone living a life of luxury apparently linking primroses to libertine indulgence.
An early appearance of the phrase in print occurs in Shakespeare, when Ophelia accuses Laertes of hypocrisy:
'Do not, as some ungracious pastors do,
Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven,
Whiles, like a puffed and reckless libertine,
Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads
And recks not his own rede.'(Hamlet, Act I, Scene III)
Variations of the phrase, such as 'primrose way' and 'primrose lane' are known. In Macbeth, the Porter speaks of 'the primrose way to the everlasting bonfire'.
Novelists and screenwriters, however, usually agree that heaven is a drafty, boring place, so it isn't a surprise that so many people prefer hotter, sexier climates.
The saucy fame probably comes from the fact that the name Primula for primrose (the Latin feminine diminutive of primus, meaning first, prime), applied to flowers that are among the first to open in spring. And it was connected with the rutting and tupping period.
So seize the day and let's enjoy it.
