Description

One of the greatest draws of San Simeon (I mean aside from Hearst Castle and the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse and sea lion colony), are the (semi) famous zebra's. While these critters aren't always out on the loose, they can usually be seen clustered at the side of the road before entering the stretch of Highway One affectionately called "Motel Row", on the way to William Randolph Hearst State Beach, and the beautiful Hearst Castle. The zebra's that reside here now are from the original ones kept in Hearst's private zoo on the Enchanted Hill. Occasionally other wildlife can be seen among them such as elk, deer, hawks and coyotes. And, during the annual migration of the Monarch Butterflies. Where our condo is we can occasionally see the herd move to their grazing spot where they are a massive draw for tourists coming from or going to the Castle. This is probably the largest cluster of the herd that we've seen in a long while. The land they are on is still owned by the Hearst Corporation. Photo (c) 2009 Twilight Productions

Hello Zeeba Neighba! (sorry, Stacey and I are both fans of the Pearls Before Swine comic) Fantastic shot and great bit of info, my dear. Seeing the Zeebas and other critters around there (including our friend the peacock and of course, Starling) are always big highlights of my trips up that way! It really is a fantastic area!

Holy cow! What happened to the herds of Bison (Buffalo)? Aren't they supposed to be Buffalo roaming the plains? And deer and antelope playing? This boggles my mind, Zebras in California! Well .. actually it seems fitting, LOL!
