Description

I've been playing with water again - I'm a water person! - and this time I did a wee bit of modeling in Blender to create that ripples effect. Vous voyez bien la resultat. Bagginsbill's water shader, of course. A few details: I'm using a environmental hemisphere (Bagginsbill's) using an equirectangular image. I made a disc (dish) in Blender sized big enough to replace Poser's GROUND: the middle of the dish has the ripple-waves you see under Charlotte's feet. I've got 3 lights: Infinite (1,1,1) at 75%, Raytracing (SBR 4.4, SMB .114, AO on Infinite (.7,.85,.75) at 40%, Raytracing (SBR 5, SMB .1, AO off (fill) IBL (1,1,1) at 22%, no shadows (IBL has a probe image attached to Colour Channel that was generated by the GenIBL tool by Bagginsbill. Oh, and I did finally use depth-of-field ... that really is something fun to play with. As always, this is a WIP... This image features Pallene hair from Daz's Plus3d, Mairy, 3Dream team and my long-suffering Charlotte dancing on water. Well, why not? It's Poser, right?

wow that transparency rendered well. i can see the ruffles in the shadow on her leg. as i've said before, i love this image, and i think it looks gorgeous. i emailed you some of my suggestions about making the light more realistic, even though i like how this makes her skin look. oh! and i didn't realize you put AO on your directional light. technically, assuming the light's shadow is working properly (and not leaving areas lit that shouldn't be), i think you don't want AO to affect directional light. AO started getting used to account for the limits of directional lighting (like nostril glow), but it's literally the shadow of ambient lighting. so light-based AO should be on the IBL or calculated as part of IDL.

Well .. if she dances upon water like that I sure hope somebody is watching!  ;-) Charlotte does not "suffer" with you .. she breathes and freely. The water is exceptional, Robyn .. were I not aware this was 3D my eyes would not question that I was looking at a photograph.  The directionals of the ripples are perfectly emenating from her footstep. We each develop a crafting system that feels comfortable or provides us the best results.  With a background in photography, lighting and DOF are at the top of my concerns when it comes to portraits which is what I enjoy creating most.  In both cases I tend to these details in the Post stage.  I always use simple light set ups within Poser .. almost like a foundation that I can build upon within Photoshop.  By small degrees I develop a sense of luminosity as I advance through Post. Sometimes I will use as many as a dozen layers for the lighting alone.  This allows for minor adjustments to each layer or to separate areas of the scene.  The final step before I complete an image is to adjust the light in a manner that is consistent throughout the image. Likewise I do not apply the DOF until very late in the development process.  One reason for this is that I tend to render a scene larger than I will use so that I have the option to crop later on if I am inspired to do so.  I like to hold back the determination of the DOF as long as possible simply to allow myself options. I am not relating this as any manner of critique .. I am merely sharing shop-talk. You have been working hard along specific lines, Robyn .. and this investment is showing a definable return over time.  I would only advise to continue what you have been doing.  Very little of true worth ever comes to us "overnight".  Once we have earned & learned something, however, it is ours to keep.  Owning a developed craft is a very fullfiling experience.  Which brings me to what I like about this image most of all: the exuberance of Charlotte's inner joy expressed through dance.  It makes me smile to see this. Outstanding image,I especially how you give the model weight/mass by including the ripples and with the character completely lost in absolute triumphant ecstasy expressed in this piece, truly expresses this loudly to even the most casual observer! My only thing is the color of the water, as most large bodies of water would reflect a grey tone from a mostly cloudy day, though the sun can still peek out but not enough to color the atmosphere/water a bluish tinge as with a clear sky... And this is probably why most wouldn't like to grey-out such a joyful piece such as this with an accurate, but dismal looking color and generally opt for a bluish one.
