Description

Captured 3/13/10, at the Los Angeles Zoo, in Los Angeles, California. A ZOOM would be most to your liking. These were real long distance shots of the sleeping hippopotamus, and I had to postwork the pics to death since the big guy was not only lying in the farthest reaches of its enclosure, apparently in no mood to entertain the gawkers and photo buffs, but was also bathed in high contrast light and shadow. --------------------- The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) or hippo, from the ancient Greek for "river horse," is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is the Pygmy Hippopotamus). The hippopotamus is the third largest land animal (after the elephant and the white rhinoceros) and the heaviest extant artiodactyl, despite being considerably shorter than the giraffe. The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers and lakes where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of 5 to 30 females and young. During the day they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grass. While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land. Source: Wikipedia free encyclopedia. LOL... what a cutie! I love hippos and your images are gorgeous Harry! Did you know that apart from mosquitos, Hippos are responsible for the most wild animal inflicted deaths in Africa every year! They are vicious critters!

I like this Harry. This is a picture of a guy who has had too much ice cream at the party:) Three good poses. If you and I were that size we'd spend most of our time sleeping too!
