Description
Prologue, Episode 2
Where: Melbourne, Australia
When: Friday, 6 August 2010, 8:10 am
I shot off a quick text message to my boss explaining that I was sick and wouldn't be coming into work that day. I wasn't sick, of course, but I was already more than 30 minutes late for my train...and some days you just have to accept that the universe is telling you to take a day off.
I can't help but laugh when I think of what I did next. It seems incredibly bizarre given what I know now. But it was also very "me". Faced with what I would soon discover was the end of the world...I sat down to spend some quality time with my PC.
I remember checking Facebook, as was my habit almost every morning back then. There was nothing new there. No new comments on the incredibly witty status update I'd posted the night before. There was one new posting from one of my American friends, but it seemed rather vague and pointless so I ignored it.
Christopher Wall Does anybody know what's going on? 32 minutes agoDisinterested, I logged off Facebook and logged onto World of Warcraft to check my auctions. Like that was the most important thing I had going on in my life at that moment: selling fake items in a fake online game world. With over 11 million players, I guess I wasn't alone in feeling that way. The world has changed a lot since then. Oddly, the American-dominated Warcraft chat rooms were filled with dozens of variations of that same question I'd seen Chris ask on Facebook a little while earlier: "Does anybody know what's going on?" I didn't think much of it at the time. I assumed it must have been a movie quote or something. I debated asking what movie or TV show it was from, but that's when my house shook. And, from somewhere far in the distance, came the sound of an explosion. Chilling. What is going on!? The image reminds me of the sort of stuff I inhaled voraciously when Wild palms was a regular feature in an earlier version of Details magazine. Fantastic work. Chilling.

A smart approach to the end of the world in the story! The image is nice, but the story is amazing.
