Description

...The light positioned here guided tall ships and later steam ships into Puget Sound from 1861 to 1922. The first lighthouse was made of wood and its' light was powered with whale oil and later karosene. In 1903 the original wooden building and cupola was replaced by this sturdy brick and stucco building and a fourth order Fresnel lamp. This was the last lighthouse in the USA built with brick. Follow-on lighthouses have all been made of concrete. It sits on Admiralty Head...so named by Captain George Vancouver when he first sailed into Puget Sound in the British Sloop, HMS Discovery, in 1792. Added: Based upon the comments below, there is interest in the style of this lighthouse. Quote from the lighthouse website, "In 1903 this new Spanish-style lighthouse was opened. It is one of the finest works of renowned, German lighthouse architect Carl Leick, whose motto was: 'Build 'em stout and make 'em last'." Admiralty Head is on Whidbey Island, Washington. I'm a huge fan of lighthouses and this is a beauty. I love the angle you shot it at. The sky really shows it off beautifully. Excellent shot.

Being born on an island in the north Atlantic - the 'Build 'em stout and make 'em last' motto worked well for us. Beautiful capture and POV. Nice and clean photo. Dana

This is such a beautiful lighthouse. I believe if you purchase a "lighthouse plate" for your vehicle here in Washington, an image of this lighthouse graces the plate. It's got such clean lines and wonderful conrast. Excellent image! (I like the crop.) :)

What a structure! What light! What contrasts and shapes! In short, what a picture. This is superb! I love the crisp clarity that you always capture and the sense of openness I feel when I see this. Super work.

You found a great angle on that shot! I like the focus on the tower with just a hint of building. Thanks for all the info, too. I appreciate the beauty of the older lighthouses but don't know much about them.
