Description

SATURN 5 "Thats one small step for man", "One giant leap for mankind". With these words Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human being to walk upon the face of another world in July 1969. Between December 1968 and December 1972 a total of twenty seven American representatives from the planet Earth would see close up the face of our nearest neighbour in space, with twelve of those twenty seven actually having the opportunity to walk upon its surface. In all a total of nine voyagers would cross the quarter million mile gap which separates the Earth, from our Moon, and which is approximately five times the size of the African Continent. The twelve astronauts would spend more than twelve days on the Moons surface, but of those twelve days less than three and half would actually be spent exploring it. The name of the programme which took them to the Moon would be Apollo. The name of the booster which would lift the elements of the Apollo Programme into space for their historic journeys to the Moon would be the Saturn 5. New Series Introduction - Day Four Once again following on from yesterday and my introduction to the new interlocking, multi-part series which will have its beginnings next Monday. The launch of China's first space station in 2015, and the near constant flow of men and materials to enlarge it has inspired a wave of patriotic fervour in America with the American people starting to ask the question "what has happened to the American space programme"?,and "why are we no longer playing a leading part in space exploration"?. In 2020 after nearly five years of growing unrest in America, a new, young, energetic American President is voted into office with a promise to the American people to get "America Back Into Space". The first act of this new American President is to appoint Robert L Carter to the newly created post of NASA Operations and Administrative Director. Carter's brief is a simple one "get America back into the game", "get America Back Into Space". To be continued
