Description

SHENZHOU 5 Since the beginning of manned space exploration, way back in 1960s, two countries, the United States and the Soviet Union (now Russia), have been the only two countries with the capability to send a person into space. That all changed on the 15th of October 2003, when the Chinese carrier booster CHANG ZHENG 2F, lifted into space the SHENZHOU-5 space vehicle with its pilot Liwei Yang. Whilst the total flight time for the mission would only be 21 hours, 22 minutes and 45 seconds, this flight, launched from Jiuquan, and making only 14 revolutions of the Earth, would now see a third nation with the capability for manned space-flight. New Series Introduction Day Five Once again following on from yesterday and my introduction to the new interlocking, multi-part series which will have its beginnings next Monday. January 2015 has seen the lunch into space of the first Chinese space station, the Tiangong-1 followed by a steady stream of Chinese launches to constantly enlarge the station for the steady stream of crews which is sent to man it it is now December 2020. In the United States a growing wave of discontent at the lack on an American presence in space has seen a new American President voted into office. This new US President has immediately appointed Robert L Carter to the newly created post of NASA Operations and Administrative Director with a simple brief to get America Back Into Space. Carter is an engineering genius and a visionary who had long dreamed of the chance to work for NASA but with the American space programme in what appeared to be decline he opted instead to work in the private sector in the aero-space industry and whilst doing so has logged up an impressive record of successes with his new and radical approachs to research, design and development. It is for this reason that the new American President has asked him to undertake the role as NASAs new Head of Operations and Administration, a role Carter has been only too willing to undertake. Carter is a long time follower of the works of the late Werner Von Braun, and many of his own design concepts have been inspired from concepts originally conceived by Von Braun. Carter firmly believes that the concepts of the past can be re-invented for use in the future. Carters days in office turn into weeks and then months as he pores over the hundreds of thousands of documents that NASA has accumulated over the years which cover advanced concept designs for the programmes which have taken place in the past. He travels the country talking to scientists, engineers, technicians and others working in the aero-space industry and slowly recruits around him the series of core groups for which his plans for the future of NASA can/will become a reality. One of his final acts is to read a report on the decommissioning which took place on the three remaining space shuttles and the current state of readiness they are in, after which he visits with a group of scientists and engineers the hanger which now houses these three remaining legends from the days when America played a leading part in the future of space exploration. Whilst at the hanger he talks to the dedicated team who have kept the three shuttles preserved for possible use in the future. Hours later Carter returns to his office, phones the American President and requests a meeting. Less than four hours later Carter and his top people are in Washington meeting with the President and after a six hour presentation, which runs late into the night, approval is given for Carters plans for the future of NASA. For the next two years Carter will work with his teams at NASA until he, and they, are ready to put America back into the game, by putting America Back Into Space. And for those of you who are wondering what comes next you will have to tune in next week.
