Description

Communications officer Elena: "We've just received an Ultra distress call, Captain Poppet. From a Chomper 639201289 - do you think it's genuine?" Poppet: "Certainly - if a Chomper sends an Ultra call it means the humans he's attached to are in mortal danger. What details do you have?" Elena: "Minor planet A1297 - was a mining planet, but the mines were worked out long ago. The workers, early robots designated Mechanicals (or Mex) are still there. There are also some humans." Poppet: "Are the Mechanicals the problem?" Elena: "All records indicate they were unreliable and sometimes dangerous. We're not sure how many are still there but there were some half miliad of Mex Type One produced, and most of these were used in mining projects." Poppet: "How long to get there?" Elena: "Half a Sol. We'll be the nearest ship." Posey (seated): "And back-up. There's just the one regiment and a dozen fighters on board. I'll call up a couple of battalions from Planet Robotica to follow us. What sort of weapons are they likely to have?" Elena: "There was a garrison of robotroops, but they left some years ago. They seem to have been equipped with old solid-shot artillery and fossil-fuel powered armour; some of the early rayguns at best." Poppet: "Is that Chomper still sending? Can we contact him?" Elena: "There was just the one message." Posey: "Then the sooner we get there, the better.
