Description

I have not seen this species in my pond for at least 10 years. I suspect this is a female because I also saw several young within a day or so of this shot. This one was about 3 foot long but they grow to a little more than 5 foot. It is one of the more colorful species I have seen in my pond. They are active at mostly night but do sun themselves during the day. They are non-poisonous but will bite if given the chance. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Wonderful shot... reminds me of many years ago when I was photographing a water snake underwater, everyone told be a snake can't bite when underwater.. I can attest that they are wrong.. haven't gotten too close to take photos of snakes ever since, I also learned that when taking closeups of snakes don't use a 15mm close focusing lens!

Sweet capture up in the bush. Much better than in the grass. Dana
