Description

This is the 2nd time in my life that I have held a Hummingbird in my hand. The 1st time was about 15 years or so ago, I saw one fly into a window on the house and knock itself silly, lol. I picked it up and although it gripped my finger and could sit up, it did not seem inclined to fly away immediately. Within a few minutes it seemed to shake its self then away it flew, apparently unharmed. Unfortunately that was many years before I had a digital camera and years after I no longer had a film camera. Today was a very nice day but a bit windy. Fortunately the pollen fall we have been experiencing was taking a break and so I had the front door open to enjoy the breeze. I had just come back from taking a walk around the pond to see what I could come across and despite the wind, I managed to get several nice shots of some Eastern Pondhawk Dragonflies and was working on the pics with the computer, when I felt and heard wings near the back of my head. I swiveled in my chair and there, just a foot or so away and at eye level, was this little female Ruby Throated Hummingbird hovering in the air. I have had a lot of Hummingbirds come close to me outside and hover at eye level as though they wanted a closer look but this time it was quite unexpected, lol. My pocket camera was within reach and I picked it up but the Hummingbird backed off and flew directly to a window at the end of the room. I managed to catch it and went outside to get a pic or two. The Hummer was not pleased at being held and was squirming about and making all sorts of sounds. I was afraid I would hurt it and I only managed to get one good shot before it managed to get free. They are really tiny, lol. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Well, how cool is that??? I have actually sat outside with a red shirt on holding sugar water and never had the experience you have. I'm so glad you got out of your comfort zone and took a "bird" photo..hehe Great shot and I enjoy the story along with it.

You are the only person I know that doesn't surprise me by holding a hummer. Anyone else I would be shocked and surprised but you have the touch. Wonderful story and even better capture.

Awww poor little fella but lucky you (and us) Great photo. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I feed the hummingbirds in my back yard and once while i was near the feeder, one kept flying right in front of my face, staring at me.LOL. It would even land on a tiny branch right at my eye level and sit there a very long time, checking me out. I loved it. And because this was happening often, I was able to take photos of it. They are beautiful and graceful little things.
